Mini-Split Air Conditioning Systems
Mini-split air conditioning systems are an alternative to traditional window-mounted units. There are three main components of a mini-split system. The first component is the indoor unit, which has an evaporator coil. One indoor unit is required per room that you want to cool. The second component is the outdoor condensing unit. Only one outdoor unit is required per system, which can support up to 4 indoor units depending on the model. Each indoor unit is then connected to the outdoor unit using a refrigerant line set. Systems come with enough refrigerant for 25-foot runs of line set. However, longer distances will require extra refrigerant.
Mini-split systems can either be single-zone or multi-zone. Single-zone systems consist of one indoor evaporator coil connected to one outdoor condensing unit. Multi-zone systems can cool from 2 to 4 rooms and consist of only one outdoor condensing unit, but the number of indoor units needed is dependent on the number of rooms you want to be cooled. Each room you need cooled will require their own indoor unit.
Window-Mounted Air Conditioner
There are different mounting styles for the indoor units of these systems. Wall-mounted indoor units are the most commonly used. They are installed using mounting brackets and are controlled by a wireless remote control. Ceiling models are available in three different styles. Ceiling models can be suspended, recessed or concealed. Ceiling suspended units are mounted right on the ceiling, which makes removal easier. Ceiling recessed units are mounted inside the ceiling so there are no protrusions after the installation of the unit. Finally, the concealed units are hidden almost completely with openings only for the cool or warm air to be released. The different types of mounting styles allow you to choose one that better fits your interior design needs.
Some systems come with a heat pump. However, these systems are not usually sufficient as the main heat source. Therefore, it is recommended that they be used as a supplementary heat source.
There are many advantages of installing mini-split air conditioners over other air conditioning alternatives. These systems are not only small in size, but also do not require ducts and provide much more flexibility in interior design needs. As mentioned before, they can be used to heat rooms in addition to their main use in cooling rooms. Many models are often Energy Star-rated therefore offering the opportunity to save in utility costs.
Compared to the many advantages, there are also a few disadvantages associated with these units. The primary disadvantage of these systems is their cost since they often cost more than central sir systems and window units of the similar capacities. Even though proper installation is important, it is also difficult to find certified installers.
